In cooperation with the Culture Ministry’s Foreign Media Department, the Associated Press has organized a photojournalism workshop on the sidelines of the 21st International Press Exhibition.

Vahid Salemi Nigjeh, a prominent Iranian photojournalist working for the AP, taught the workshop on Wednesday, November 11.

Photojournalism is a form of journalism that employs images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism.

Some of the main topics taught during the workshop, which was overwhelmingly welcomed by photojournalists, students and visitors, were: History of photojournalism, form and concept, war photography, ethical framework which demands that the work is both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms, as well as creating pictures that contribute to the news media. Other topics included important characteristics that every photo should encompass such as timeliness, objectivity, and narrative.

History, pioneers, origins in war photography, street photography, social, ethical and legal considerations, unethical practices and the impact of new technologies were also briefly discussed during this exceptional workshop.

The 21st International Press Exhibition is underway at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla. It will wrap up on Friday, November 13.
